Emission Free Buildings

Energy and building efficiency strategy to minimize the environmental impact of business activities

Our company has always been attentive to technological innovations that allow a reduction in harmful emissions. The Emission Free Buildings project involves the introduction of new technologies in all FERCAM buildings that bring the company closer to carbon neutrality goals. The range of interventions include: the installation of photovoltaic panels, Relamping with LED lamps, the use of home automation systems, and crepuscular technologies.

Smart and rational use of resources

Photovoltaic panels

The first action towards improving energy efficiency was taken in 2015, when FERCAM began the process of installing 40 KW photovoltaic panels at the headquarters in Bolzano, and then in Verona and Rho Branches. The first results were more than positive: the energy provided by the new systems ensured full supply autonomy during summer months.

This advantageous result prompted FERCAM to extend the project to other locations as well. In addition to the operational offices and the Headquarters, the company logistic centres and owned warehouses were also involved. In fact, in 2021, the installations of the new plants involved 15 additional Branches, and the number is constantly growing. The current goal is to further invest in photovoltaic systems, to achieve 4MW total power.

The data

With reference to FERCAM Branches owned by the Group, at the end of 2021 the photovoltaic panels provided:

  • Total power of over 2 MW
  • Photovoltaic energy produced in a year equal to MWh 1,617
  • Photovoltaic energy produced and self-consumed in one year equal to MWh 1.003

LED relamping and lighting systems

In recent years, FERCAM has invested in the adoption of LED lighting systems, an intervention that aims energy efficiency and saving.

The Relamping project, which began in 2015 on 10 branches, involved the replacement of traditional filament lamps with more innovative LED lamps. The savings that can be achieved through this technology are considerable: the average consumption of a traditional lamp is about 400W whereas the use of an LED lamp reduces it by half, if not more. At the Bolzano headquarters, the installation of the new high-efficiency system contributed to 221,011 KWh of energy saving - corresponding to 65% of current consumption.

The installed LED lighting systems are equipped with innovative home automation technology, which allows users to fully manage the functionality of the lamps, even remotely. Each lamp is equipped with a presence and brightness detection system, according to which it is activated or deactivated. Thanks to this Smart LED system it is estimated an energy saving of 60% and an lamp life extension up to 25 years.

The advantages brought by the new system do not only concern sustainability but also guarantee a factor of well-being to people who spend many hours in warehouses or offices. Compared to a single traditional lamp body that provides 100Lux, the luminous flux produced by an LED lamp can reach 300Lux, a value that complies with the INAIL regulations for safety at work.

70% of the branches owned by FERCAM are already equipped with Smart LED lighting systems. Given the countless advantages of this system, the company's goal for the next few years is to reach 100%.
