FERCAM begins testing distribution with IVECO's new hydrogen eDaily

FERCAM tests the eDAILY, the first prototype of a fuel cell electric vehicle presented by IVECO, the commercial vehicle brand of the Iveco Group, and Hyundai Motor Company in Hanover, at IAA Transportation 2022.

The ambitious sustainability objectives shared by Iveco and Hyundai led the two companies to find in FERCAM an ideal interlocutor to perform the first field test for the new technology. The South Tyrolean logistics company, already engaged for years with investments and initiatives for the reduction of emissions from freight transport activities, has gladly supported the innovative project, namely by sharing its expertise and operational point of view. The operational performances were validated by simulating ordinary transport activities: starting from FERCAM’s headquarters in Bolzano, the vehicle made a collection in the city centre and then reached a winery in San Michele. After refuelling at the only Italian H2 station, located in South Bolzano, the journey continued towards Egna, and then ended at the FERCAM Trento Branch.

The working eDAILY FCEV prototype is equipped with Hyundai’s 90 kW hydrogen fuel cell system and 140 kW e-motor. Six tanks offer a combined storage capacity of 12 kg of hydrogen. The GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) 7.2 ton prototype has been tested in Europe, confirming a driving range of 350 km, maximum payload of 3 tons and a refueling time within 15 minutes. An integral part of the eDAILY FCEV is the battery pack by FPT Industrial, the powertrain brand of Iveco Group, while the fuel cell system provided by Hyundai is the latest step in the company’s 20+ year hydrogen mobility journey. Hyundai’s advanced fuel cell technology is already in use in various applications, and especially in the commercial vehicle sector.

FERCAM Emission Free Project

This is not the first collaborative project in which FERCAM chooses to participate to accelerate the transition towards carbon neutral solutions: research and development activities in collaboration with CNR-ITAE, for the design and construction of BEV and FCHEV vehicles and for the production, storage and distribution of alternative fuels, were launched in 2021. More recently, the project has expanded to include Sapio as well, in a Memorandum of Understanding for the transition to sustainable mobility in the urban area.

This initiative is just one of the pieces of the broader project for Emission Free transport and logistics, which envisaged system efficiency interventions, with LED lights replacement, photovoltaic systems and charging stations for electric vehicles, plus huge investments for the progressive updating of the fleet, with the introduction of CNG, LNG and electric vehicles.
